AARP and other advocacy groups are hard at work with cooperating communities to create a “dementia-friendly” business community to assist the ever-growing senior population. Minnesota communities are at the forefront of some of these efforts and are described in the article below.
You may have heard of some European communities that have focused on creating special “dementia-friendly” environments for their seniors living with dementia. The efforts in Europe have involved special training for business employees on how to identify and assist those seniors living in the community while struggling with dementia. And, in some cases, store owners provide “dementia-friendly” business transactions and store/product design. Many of these efforts have been quite successful and seem to have inspired the AARP to partner with other senior advocacy groups to experiment with how that would work here. Minnesotans are some of the first to try it!
